Practical group clothing for memorable school outings

A school trip is easier to organise when everyone knows what to wear. Matching T-shirts can help a group look coordinated and make staff easier to recognise, while sensible layers keep pupils more comfortable throughout the day.

Printingmad, operated by TEE MAD LIMITED in Washington, Tyne and Wear, supplies plain and printed garments for school outings across the North East. Our catalogue includes children’s cotton and performance T-shirts, hoodies, microfleeces and waterproof layers, plus adult T-shirts for teachers and helpers.

Start with the setting rather than the design: a museum visit, outdoor field study and multi-day residential may call for different fabrics and clothing. Then agree the group colours, supported print positions, sizes and final artwork. Matching clothes are a useful visual aid, but they are not a substitute for school safeguarding, supervision, headcounts or risk assessments.

Choose suitable clothing for the day

Comfort & activities

Cotton T-shirts suit many everyday visits, while quick-dry performance tops can be useful for active activities. Check the garment’s actual fit and care details; different materials may require different printing methods.

Weather & layers

A hoodie or microfleece can be helpful for cooler conditions, while rain protection should be chosen according to the forecast and the activity. Don’t assume a standard hoodie or fleece is waterproof.

Fit & practical details

Use the relevant size charts for children and accompanying adults. Make sure clothing allows easy movement and is suitable for activities, transport and any site-specific rules.

Colours, artwork and group identity

Strong, consistent colours can make it easier to recognise a school group in photographs and at meeting points. Consider a different plain colour for staff where useful, but ensure your school remains responsible for its normal identification and supervision arrangements.

Choose a design that is legible at the actual printed size. A simple approved trip title or class graphic can work better than lots of small lettering. If you intend to use a school crest or name, obtain permission first and supply final artwork that is ready to print.

Think carefully before printing individual children’s names, especially on clothing worn in public. Follow the school’s safeguarding and privacy policy. We do not edit customer artwork or decide which personal information is suitable to display.

Colour note: The accompanying photograph illustrates colour combinations. It is not an accurate swatch or proof of which colours are available for any particular supplier garment.

1
Agree the trip requirements

Printed garments take 7–10 working days. Check and approve spelling, sizes and artwork early. Fixed trip dates should be discussed before ordering; shorter production times are not guaranteed.

School trip clothing FAQs

What garments are best for a school day trip?

For a warm-weather day trip, a comfortable cotton T-shirt is a simple option. Active outings may benefit from a suitable performance tee. For cooler or changeable conditions, plan a jumper, hoodie, fleece or weatherproof jacket as appropriate to the activity and school guidance.

Can pupils and teachers wear matching designs?

Yes, where the selected children’s and adult garments support the required print position. We can supply different catalogue styles, but colours and fits may not be identical across ranges. Compare the chosen supplier colours and prepare appropriate print-ready artwork.

Can we include a school name or logo?

Only with the school’s permission. Supply the completed artwork in a print-ready format; we do not redraw or edit logos. Check any school rules about displaying identifiable information on pupils’ clothing.

Should we put every child’s name on their T-shirt?

The school should decide whether visible individual names are appropriate under its safeguarding and privacy arrangements. A shared group colour or approved general design may be preferable. Contact us if individual variations are proposed, rather than assuming they can be configured at checkout.

Can we order one colour for pupils and another for staff?

Yes, subject to the garment colours available and the school’s approval. Different colours can make roles clearer, but they do not replace supervision, registers, identification procedures or risk assessments.

Are all the recommended garments printable?

No printing position is guaranteed merely because a garment is listed here. Buy plain garments or choose printing only where supported on the specific product page. Technical sportswear and outerwear can need special decoration methods.

What does printing cost?

On supported garments, front printing is £5 including VAT per garment, and front-and-back printing is £7.50 including VAT per garment when both positions are available. The garment price is separate.

Can you prepare or fix our school trip artwork?

No. Artwork must be ready to print; Printingmad does not edit supplied artwork. The artwork guide explains how to prepare usable files and avoid problems with size, background and resolution.

How long do printed school trip T-shirts take?

Printed garments take 7–10 working days. Allow extra time beforehand to confirm sizes, obtain school sign-off and supply the final design; contact us before ordering if the trip has a fixed date.

Can plain and printed garments be ordered together?

Yes. Mixed orders are dispatched together after printing is complete, rather than sending the plain garments ahead of the printed ones.

What is the delivery charge, and can the school collect?

Delivery costs £9.40 excluding VAT per combined box. Free collection is available for eligible printed and mixed orders after ready-to-collect confirmation. Plain-only orders use supplier delivery and are not available for collection.

Can we return printed group clothing?

Personalised garments are generally non-returnable for a change of mind. Statutory rights in respect of faulty or incorrectly supplied goods remain unaffected. Confirm sizes and artwork before submitting the order.

A simple checklist for school organisers

Put one organiser in charge of the garment list and school sign-off. Record each product code, approved colour, chosen size and quantity; check that adult helpers have suitable sizes too. If more than one product is used, compare the actual shades rather than assuming two suppliers’ “royal blue” will look identical.

When the finished artwork is ready, double-check contrast against the garment colour, ask the school to approve any wording or logo, and ensure the required print position exists on the selected garment. For a larger group, plan backwards from the outing date to allow for production and delivery. If embroidery is preferred, it is available by enquiry only and should not be assumed to be a checkout choice.

Personalised clothing is generally non-returnable for a change of mind; statutory rights for faulty or incorrectly supplied goods remain unaffected. See our returns policy, artwork guide and garment care guide before ordering.
